Sorry for the delay:
Don't mind the small gap on the right side 6 cards in. It's where another vertical post is located that was removed to trim it down a touch.
Frame supports 21 cards but currently has 18 installed split between 3 individual rigs. Each rig is running a Asus Z270-AR, Celeron G3930, 8GB Crucial DDR4 and dual SeaSonic Prime 1000 watt Titanium power supplies.

Yes, you'll want a powered riser. This is just a random one on Amazon, I'm not recommending this specific riser, but as an example:

Yep. Most of them got that idea from a guy on YouTube called TwoTon Hasher. I talked to him a while back about his design and made a few changes and built my own but larger. Even ended up selling him some Red Devil GPU's! Mine was 8x4x4. Like every project, you learn things along the way and things you wish you would have done different. Had mine built out, OSB on all surfaces, dual 24" fans on top but had yet to cut my filter intakes which were 20"x24" (6 of them). During this time of wishing I had done this instead of that, and damn this would have worked better.. my neighbor stopped by and said WTF are you building. Explained what I had built, why, and what I wished I had done different.
I mean this literally, not as a joke, this mining rig enclosure is now a big ass dog house at my neighbors. His two black labs love it. All I had to do to retrofit is put a new top on it without 24" fan holes.
So my new one will go on my rear covered porch that isn't being used. My new design will be 12' long instead of 8'. The widths and height will remain at 4'. Exhaust fans will increase to triple 24" fans. Good thing is I already built the first one so I know what not to do this time. I've actually thought about using 8" fans. Wanna say Vortex? Can't remember the name. Reason being I could then use standard HVAC ductwork and point the exhaust wherever I want rather than just straight up. I plan to try a few designs over the winter but finalize on something and build it out prior to spring temps. Most likely they will end up as 24" fans.
Here is the last one I built that is now a dog house :)
They are about 85% power right now. With the new cards coming I'll probably put them on their own 7 card frames and keep them in a different part of the house and let the household AC handle them for a few weeks till it starts getting cooler. If I put them with the others I'll have to trim the power back to the 70% range or the portable AC's won't keep up. From my testing, dropping back to 70% would allow me to add a few more cards and maintain the current room temp. I just ran my current cards up to where it would hold a steady temp.
Right now my current cards are on a Husky garage shelving unit from Home Depot. So I can either start adding more cards above them and reduce the power or put them on their own frame and locate them somewhere else for in the house for the winter. I do miss my basement in Iowa. Nice n cool all year.
This is when it had 18 on it. The gaps have been filled in with 3 additional cards:

Forgot to add this. As /u/thekinghippo mentioned, some are doing to pretty creative things with grow tents. Check out https://youtu.be/UQMrtuGFbt0 for some cool grow tent ideas and https://youtu.be/E-_9F8R_PFU for outdoor mining set ups.

Buy Syba SD-PEX40099 4 Port SATA III PCIe 2.0 x1 Controller Card: RAID Controllers - Amazon.com ✓ FREE DELIVERY possible on eligible purchases
If you want something dead simple, something this would work just fine:

I actually use these in unRAID. These are not gonna be blazing fast SAS3 speeds capable of maxing out read performance across 4 disks all at the same time in a software raid environment but they will work perfectly well for what you described and are cheap!

I could be wrong but I believe the second fan is the same as the Wally brand. If your interested those, they typically go on sale on their website for $12.88. I use them on my rigs.

This was my first attempt and the only pic I have of that rig. It had more vertical supports added.
Later down the road I got more serious and switched over to a metal garage style rack/shelf and added 21 cards across a single row.
All this is/was working fine but changing out a card or moving something is a pain. So I'm building a single 14 GPU unit (pre cut 80/20 frame) using the Asus B250 Mining Expert board and 13 1080ti's per frame. Only 13 due to the limitations of the board. Bios update is supposed to be coming opening up the other slots (19 PCIe slots total) for non Asus mining cards.
My plan with the 14 GPU frame is to see how I like it, how cumbersome is it when I need to change something.. if it works out, I'll keep my big black rack and just fill it full of 14 GPU frames.
